Main engine power shows how much useful work an engine can deliver. Fuel consumption shows how efficiently that power is produced.
A simple formula can be used to estimate fuel consumption:
Fuel Consumption (kg/h) = Power (kW) × SFOC (g/kWh) ÷ 1000
For example, an engine producing 45,760 kW with an SFOC of 165 g/kWh consumes about 7.55 tonnes of fuel per hour. This equals approximately 181.2 tonnes per day.
Fuel consumption is not a fixed value. It changes with engine load, engine condition, fuel quality, weather conditions, and hull fouling.
The operating profile of the vessel also plays an important role. Different voyages can produce different consumption figures.
It is important to remember that MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating) is not usually the same as normal operating power at sea.
Main engine fuel consumption should also not be confused with total ship fuel consumption. Auxiliary engines and other onboard equipment consume fuel as well.
Understanding power and fuel consumption helps ship operators improve efficiency. It also helps reduce operating costs and optimize vessel performance.
